In Review: Amazing & Fantastic #03

Amazing & Fantastic #03 by the Planet Jimbot Studio.

You would think that as we at FQP put out anthologies I’d be against reading one from another team, but you’d be wrong. Amazing & Fantastic #03 is a well put together title (as you would expect from the ever capable Jim Campbell) and boasts a very talented roster of creators, headed by Jim Alexander.

The comic itself is 24 pages and there are 6 tales in the book. There are strips and text stories, serials and stand-alones. The title doesn’t have a ‘hook’ that ties each story to a theme and so the comic is free to tell any story it likes.

There are scheduled to be 5 issues in the run, so this is technically the halfway mark for the serials.

I don’t want this to be the type of review where each of the stories gets a little bit of comment, as I find that to be damaging to the book as a whole. You are, after all buying a collection- singling out any of the works could be seen as dismissing the works of many other individuals.

My thoughts on the issue as a whole are that the book has a nice balance, however a ‘previously’ box would be welcome for the serials to help get up to speed. There is some lovely writing on show here, accompanied by some precise, clear storytelling and beautiful images. Elinor Winter, as editor has put a lot of thought into how this collection needs to function. I'm already wondering the series will be collected into a trade.

As always, feel free to contact Jim directly for a copy of the book- it is a mere £2.95 for a copy via planetjimbot@gmail.com presumably the first two issues are still available as well.

FQP heads to Bristol!

This weekend (May 11th & 12th)sees  one of the oldest modern conventions in the UK taking place.

Bristol was for many years the only real convention worth attending, and while the choices for the discerning comic fan are now ‘much’ wider this has always been one of my faves.

This year the gig takes place in The Future Inn, right in the heart of Bristol city centre and a stone’s throw from Cabot Circus. Unfortunately it appears that admission is to pre-sales only, but there is still time to get yourself a ticket.

I’ll be there for the whole weekend, with copies of the latest issues of FutureQuake, Something Wicked, Zarjaz and the longest running fanzine in the UK- Dogbreath.

As a convention special I’m taking 50p off the cover of everything produced more than a year ago- so now those back issues are even more worthwhile.

Also for the convention- I’ll have my mammoth pile of sketches with me- spend more than £10 earth money and you can choose one or even request a custom sketch time willing. Also be on the lookout for David Broughton- he is going to be working on a page of art for the next Dogbreath on sunday, make sure you drop by and check his work out.

In Review- FOOD CHAIN 01

Food Chain 01 by Jim Alexander, Peter Woods and Jim Campbell.

Published by Planet Jimbot.

Blurb: "You're in Sales. You're top of the food chain. Your whole life - every client detail - is held on your smartphone. So what happens when someone gets hold of your phone - your contacts - your life? Someone bad? Someone demonic?"

Good pitch, eh? It made me keen to read the comic so job done- Over the last few months I've read quite a bit from Planet Jimbot- and I've yet to be dissappointed. The Jims' are building quite a stable of titles, and this one even features an artist I was familiar with. Pete Woods worked on 'Valour & Mettle' in FutrueQuake 24 (You do have a copy, right? If not- you can fix that by clicking over to the shop!) and here he does an excellent job of storytelling.

Launched back at the LSCC in March I've finally gotten round to putting my thoughts on this strip down.

Okay- There is a ot going on here, and we aren't being told everything. Marcus is our lead character, and he's not exactly a nice man. He's 'very' career driven.

There is almost nothing he won't do to close a deal, in fact he seems to be very willing to go the 'extra' mile to make clients happy. However- his world seems a little 'off' There are enough strange things going on throughout the strip that by the time I finished my second read I was still piecing things together. I hate giving anything away in reviews so there's not really much more I can say without spoiling things.

This is, in my opinion, a remarkably disturbing read, but not for the obvious things. it is all the little stuff in the background that adds to the overall feeling that Marcus is in a very bad place.

Congrats to all involved for yet another cracker from Planet Jimbot.
